Basic Testing Bend each test weld to a 30-degree angle from its vertical point. This bend can be done with a hammer, pipe, wrench, or other tool depending on the stud diameter. Inspect the weld connection to see if cracks or other flaws have appeared after the stud was bent.

The ring test simply involves striking the side of the head of the stud with a 2 kg hammer. A ringing tone after striking indicates good fusion, whereas a dull tone indicates a lack of fusion. All studs should be checked in this way by the welder or the welder's mate.

Weld Stud Test Tools are used during the production of sheet metal products. They are designed for a quick and easy controlled test of the strength and integrity of welds holding threaded welding studs onto sheet metal. They are most often used for Quality Control in the automotive and appliance industries.

Basic Testing Inspect the weld to see if there are visible flaws such as spattering, burring, slag, and so on. Bend each test weld to a 30-degree angle from its vertical point. This bend can be done with a hammer, pipe, wrench, or other tool depending on the stud diameter.

BEND TEST: (see illustrations) By striking the weld stud with a hammer, or by sliding a length of pipe over the weld stud, the stud can be bent a minimum of 30 degrees away from its axis, or until failure occurs. Satisfactory welded studs should exhibit a complete 90 degree bend without failure.

ISO 13918. This is a welding standard that relates specifically to studs and ceramic ferrules used in arc stud welding.
