SSOs pollute surface and ground waters, threaten public health, adversely affect aquatic life, and impair the recreational use and aesthetic enjoyment of surface waters. Typical consequences of SSOs include the closure of beaches and other recreational areas, inundated properties, and polluted rivers and streams.

Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) are a release of untreated or partially treated sewage from a municipal sanitary sewer.

Sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) differ from combined sewer overflows (CSOs). CSOs are discharges from older sewer systems designed to carry both domestic sewage and storm water, collectively referred to as combined sewage.

If a UD or SSO that requires public notification occurs outside of normal business hours, the responsible individual must also notify the TCEQ Emergency Response Hotline 800-832-8224. Within 48 hours after notifying the public, you must also report to the regional office that public notice has been given.

Multiply the flow rate expressed in gallons per minute from the chart multiplied by the duration of the SSO in minutes to determine the total volume of the SSO.

Sanitary sewers are different than combined sewers, which are designed to collect large volumes of stormwater in addition to sewage and industrial wastewater. Occasionally, sanitary sewers will release raw sewage. These types of releases are called sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs).
