API 510, Pressure Vessel Inspection Code: In-service Inspection, Rating, Repair and Alteration, 11th edition, enhances operational safety by updating the in-service and condition-monitoring programs needed to determine the integrity of pressure vessels and pressure-relieving devices.

Pressure Vessel Inspector Certification API offers a 510 certification through their Individual Certification Program. The purpose of the certification is to identify individuals that possess broad knowledge in maintenance, inspection, repair, and alteration of pressure vessels.

PRESSURE VESSEL INSPECTION CHECKLIST External coverings, including insulation and corrosion resistant coatings, inspected for defects. Entire vessel exterior inspected for any kind of leakage of gas, vapor, or liquid. Mountings inspected to see if they allow for appropriate expansion and contraction.

For example, ASME Section VIII covers fabrication of pressure vessels but once the pressure vessel are put in service, API 510 takes place. Process piping in refineries, terminals or petrochemical plants are designed and built per ASME B 31.3. After they are placed in service, API 570 governs inspection and repairs.

API RP 572, Inspection of Pressure Vessels is a recommended practice developed and published by the American Petroleum Institute (API) that covers the inspection of pressure vessels, including those with a design pressure under 15 psig, and the standards for their construction and maintenance.

This inspection code covers the in-service inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating activities for pressure vessels and the pressure-relieving devices protecting these vessels.

The ASME Section VIII pressure vessel code covers design and fabrication of new equipment. Once a vessel is installed and placed into service, it no longer governs. The American Petroleum Institute (API) 510 code addresses vessels after that are in service.

Certified API 510 Pressure Vessel inspectors must have a broad knowledge base relating to maintenance, inspection, repair, and alteration of pressure vessels. The API 510 examination is designed to determine if individuals have such knowledge.
