Numbers can be written either as words (e.g., one hundred) or numerals (e.g., 100). In this article we follow the guidelines of APA Style, one of the most common style guides used in academic writing. Chicago Manual of Style Numbers Rules Spell out numbers zero through one hundred; all whole numbers should be spelled out, e.g., twelve thousand. Spell out numbers at the beginning of a sentence. Fractions should be written with numerals unless they begin a sentence.

Noninteger numbers are best written in their decimal form (1.5, 5.0). If they can be expressed as simple fractions, you can do that instead: “one and a half” for 1.5. If you absolutely want to write it out, then you'll have to do it the way they are spelt: “one point five”, “five point zero”.

A simple rule for using numbers in writing is that small numbers ranging from one to ten (or one to nine, depending on the style guide) should generally be spelled out. Larger numbers (i.e., above ten) are written as numerals.
