This is a very specialized visa for people who wish to study Japanese culture, arts and skills. Applicants have to study the respective art under the surveillance of a qualified expert in the art and cannot engage in work or any paid activities. The visa period ranges between 90 days to 3 years.

With a "Designated Activity (for job-hunting)"visa, you can stay in Japan for six months. You can extend it for another six months with a recommendation letter issued by the university only once.

The new visa is a Designated Activity Visa specifically for ski instructors. It does away with the requirement for the 36 months experience as long as you hold the SIA Alpine Level One certification, or a recognized equivalent.

Designated activities (Long Stay for sightseeing and recreation): a visa for an individual at the age of 18 years or older and has savings equivalent to more than 30 million Japanese yen owned by you and your spouse.

Japan currently provides about 30 types of "Status of Residence" as listed below. For these "Status of Residence" except "Temporary Visitor", a "Residence Card" will be issued at passport control when you enter Japan.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES (文化活動) is a VISA STATUS to engage in academic studies and research or study and learn activities which are peculiar to Japan and Japanese culture with no pay or salary.

What is a Certificate of Eligibility? The Certificate of Eligibility is a document issued by the Regional Immigration Authority that determines whether an applicant will be granted entry to the country of Japan. Note that the COE is only a part of the pre-screening visa process and not a visa itself.

Even if your job is not decided until graduation, you may continue finding full-time employment for one year by changing your status of residence from Student to Designated Activities. (The status of residence may be granted for six months with a one-time extension for a maximum of one year.)
