As an adult, you might act aggressively in response to negative experiences. For example, you might get aggressive when you feel frustrated. Your aggressive behavior may also be linked to depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health conditions.

While victims of aggressive behavior are at risk for psychological and emotional traumatic reactions as well as psychiatric disorders, such as panic attacks, phobias, and depression, aggressors also face negative consequences. This includes increased risk of legal punishment and, in some cases, imprisonment.

In order to work through aggressive behaviors, one must first identify the primary cause and underlying factors. The most common way to treat and reduce aggressive behavior in an adult is some form of psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Aggression refers to behavior that is intended to harm another individual. Violence is aggression that creates extreme physical harm. Emotional or impulsive aggression refers to aggression that occurs with only a small amount of forethought or intent. Instrumental or cognitive aggression is intentional and planned.

Effects of aggression Strained or ruined interpersonal relationships. Physical injury due to tendency to engage in fights. Physical injury due to risky or reckless behaviors, such as aggressive driving. Onset or worsening of mental health disorders.

The concept enables us to understand the ultimate causes for competitive and aggressive behavior, leading naturally to a definition of aggression. We argue that the elements of aggression are: Human Survival Potential, Norms, and Provocation. The same three elements also constitute group aggression.

The three aggression types comprised reactive-expressive (i.e., verbal and physical aggression), reactive-inexpressive (e.g., hostility), and proactive-relational aggression (i.e., aggression that can break human relationships, for instance, by circulating malicious rumours).

There are four different types of aggressive behavior: accidental, expressive, instrumental and hostile.

Stages of Aggression The three stages are: Anxiety: distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune. Verbal Aggression: communication of overt or suppressed hostility, either innate or resulting from continued frustration.
