Federally recognized Indian tribal governments aren't subject to federal income tax but they must pay employment tax on wages paid to employees.

A Native American tribal document is an official tribal or community membership document issued by a Native American Indian tribe, or an Alaska Eskimo or Aleut community, that is recognized by the U.S. federal government.

The income earned from working within your own Tribe's Indian Country is exempt from state income tax if you were also living within your own Tribe's Indian Country when you earned that income. You must pay state income tax on any income you earned while not living or not working within your own Tribe's Indian Country.

In most situations, members of federally recognized tribes who work for an employer or who are self-employed are subject to federal income taxes on wages and self-employment income earned.

If you are a member of a federally recognized tribe, you may receive taxable distributions from your tribe. The tribe must report these distributions to the IRS and to you on Form 1099-MISC.
