It's also important to understand that Part 48 is split into two sections: Part 48A – Regulations for training UNDERGROUND miners. Part 48B – Regulations for training miners at SURFACE AREAS of UNDERGROUND mining operations.

Part 46 covers surface mines, including sand, clay, gravel, limestone, cement, marble, and granite. Part 48: Part 48 is essentially a group of "uncategorized mines," which means all mine types that don't fall into the above list. This includes underground mines.

Instead of a two-year expiration, experienced miners' MSHA training does not expire. Their standing as an experienced miner can expire if they go more than five years without mining. Then, they must take an 8-hour experienced miner training before they become compliant again.

MSHA Part 48 covers training and retraining requirements for miners. It contains two subparts: Subpart A focuses on underground miners, while MSHA Part 48 Subpart B training topics are specific to miners working at surface mines and surface areas of underground mines.
