Fungal endophytes (endobionts) can be defined as the microfungi living within the tissues of plant without causing them probable disease symptoms. Endophytic fungi play an important role in the growth promotion and resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses and diseases in plants.

Unlike mycorrhizal fungi that colonize plant roots and grow into the rhizosphere, endophytes reside entirely within plant tissues and may grow within roots, stems and/or leaves, emerging to sporulate at plant or host-tissue senescence (Sherwood & Carroll, 1974; Carroll, 1988; Stone et al., 2004).

INTRODUCTION An endophyte is any microbe (typically fungal or bacterial) that inhabits internal tissues of plants without causing disease. 1, 2 All or most plants possess endophytes, and in most cases endophytes are seed transmitted and begin to promote growth and plant health as soon as seeds germinate.

In addition to antifungal compounds, endophytes also produce antibacterial compounds that may protect the host plant against bacterial pathogens. These antibacterial compounds vary, with some being broad spectrum but others providing protection against a narrower target group [44].

Fungal endophytes are extremely common and highly diverse microorganisms that live within plant tissues, but usually remain asymptomatic. Endophytes traditionally have been considered plant mutualists, mainly by reducing herbivory via production of mycotoxins, such as alkaloids.

Bioprospecting is a tool to find diversity of various endophytes and ways to commercialize them. Endophytic fungi reside in plant tissues being a vascular plant or grasses) having asymptomatic symbiotic association for part of or the entire life cycle.
