Hundreds of little metal squares, called fins, surround the hot water pipe to help distribute heat and warm the air faster. They make an already efficient system even better, that is unless they get clogged up with dust and dirt.

Electric baseboard heaters are long, narrow devices that run along the bottom of walls. Inside the heater's aluminum housing is a metal heating element. Electricity runs through the element, which generates heat. Around the element are fins that spread the heat throughout the room.

If you want to permanently reduce the amount of heat transfer from this section of baseboard radiator, depending on the specific design of your baseboards, you might be able to carefully remove the fins from part of some of length of it. This is another way of reducing the heat transfer properties.

Fin tube baseboard radiators work by convection; cool air enters the bottom, gets heated by the copper tubing and aluminum fins and then exits out the top as warm air. Fin tube radiators, often called “Slant Fins” after the major manufacturer, operate best when air flows freely through the fins.

You can do this by dividing the I=B=R heat output ratings that include a 15% heating effect factor by 1.15, and then size the baseboard to the room's design load. Figure 1 (above) shows a comparison of typical residential finned-tube baseboard output with and without the 15% heating effect factor.

This does add to the operating efficiency of a modulating and condensing boiler. A high efficiency condensing boiler starts condensing when the heating system water is around 130F. Life Expectancy- Generally a cast iron boiler has a 30 year or more life expectancy.

The pressure release valve protects the baseboard heaters from reaching a dangerous level of pressure build up. The isolation valve enables partial shut off so you can turn off and work on one heating area while the rest of the system continues to function.
