The third equivalence point of phosphoric acid is not detectable in water because it occurs at such a high pH. The pH is too high because the third equivalence point is very small.

Phosphoric acid, also called orthophosphoric acid, (H3PO4), the most important oxygen acid of phosphorus, used to make phosphate salts for fertilizers. It is also used in dental cements, in the preparation of albumin derivatives, and in the sugar and textile industries.

Why does phosphoric acid mask the colour of iron(III) complex in water? In the redox titration of iron(III) with permanganate or dichromate, we use phosphoric(V) acid to "mask" the color of iron(III) because it interferes with the end point color change.

There are three such points for phosphoric acid. They are labeled on the plot. These points are important in the prediction of the titration curves. They correspond to points where half of an equivalent of proton has been consumed by addition of strong base.

Because phosphoric acid is a weak acid, it is typically used only as an analyte. When the titration reaches the first equivalence point, the solution will contain the conjugate base H2PO4-. ... This will give the solution a pH greater than seven at that equivalence point.

The third pKa value for phosphoric acid is 12.4. The base used in the titration would have to exceed this value by about 2 pH units to produce the third equivalence point. NaOH at titration concentrations (0.1M 0.5M) has a maximum pH of about 13 and therefore the third equivalence point is not shown.

Pipette aliquot of phosphoric acid solution into 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Dilute with distilled water to about 100 mL. Add 2-3 drops of methyl orange or 3-4 drops of thymolphthalein solution. Titrate with NaOH solution till the first color change.
