A Brushless or BLDC motor converts supplied electrical energy into mechanical energy using electromagnets in the stator to spin permanent magnets on the rotor, without the need for brushes. Brushless motors offer high efficiency and feature superb controllability.

A Brushless DC Electric Motor (BLDC) is an electric motor powered by a direct current voltage supply and commutated electronically instead of by brushes like in conventional DC motors.

There are two types of commonly used DC motors: Brushed motors, and brushless motors (or BLDC motors). As their names imply, DC brushed motors have brushes, which are used to commutate the motor to cause it to spin. Brushless motors replace the mechanical commutation function with electronic control.

This is part 1 of the Technical Manual Series for brushless motors, which explains the three main types of brushless motors: inner rotor type, outer rotor type, and disk rotor type.

Types of Brushless DC Motors Basically, BLDC are of two types, one is outer rotor motor and other is inner rotor motor. The basic difference between the two is only in designing, their working principles are same.

Brushed DC motors have coils in their center rotating around permanent magnets while brushless DC motors have permanent magnet in the center that rotate around the coils.

Like a brushed motor, a brushless motor works by alternating the polarity of windings inside the motor. It is essentially an inside out brushed motor, which eliminates the need for brushes. In a brushless DC motor, the permanent magnets are fitted to the rotor, with the electromagnets on the stator.
