The horizontal stabilizer trim actuator (HSTA) is an actuating device for the horizontal stabilizer of a civil aircraft. It is one of the key equipments for the aircraft to realize pitch control. At present, the HSTA technology is gradually changing from power-by-fluid to power-by-wire.

Trim tabs adjust the neutral position of the elevator, whereas in aircraft using 'stabiliser' trim, the whole tailplane pivots. In both cases you adjust to give the desired 'hands off' position matching your desired speed and power settings.

The horizontal stabilizer prevents up-and-down, or pitching, motion of the aircraft nose. The elevator is the small moving section at the rear of the stabilizer that is attached to the fixed sections by hinges.

In most cases, a trimmable stabilizer is either manually or electrically controlled and hydraulically actuated. In some Fly-By-Wire equipped aircraft, the stabilizer automatically adjusts to a one G loading without the need for pilot action.

The hinged part of the horizontal stabilizer is called the elevator; it is used to deflect the tail up and down. The outboard hinged part of the wing is called the aileron; it is used to roll the wings from side to side.

Rudder. The rudder is typically mounted on the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer, part of the empennage. When the pilot pushes the left pedal, the rudder deflects left. Pushing the right pedal causes the rudder to deflect right.

The rudder is controlled by the left and right rudder pedals. When the rudder is deflected into the airflow, a horizontal force is exerted in the opposite direction.

Elevator. The elevator is the primary flight control surface that moves the aircraft around the horizontal or lateral axis. This causes the nose of the aircraft to pitch up or down. The elevator is hinged to the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer and typically spans most or all of its width.
