Filing Obligations A bank must electronically file a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) for each transaction in currency1 (deposit, withdrawal, exchange of currency, or other payment or transfer) of more than $10,000 by, through, or to the bank.

Form 8300 must be reviewed by the department supervisor or other person who authorized the transaction; this person must then sign and date the form and indicate his/her University title and phone number. Note: Page two of Form 8300 must be completed when there are multiple parties to the transaction.

The law requires that trades and businesses report cash payments of more than $10,000 to the federal government by filing IRS/FinCEN Form 8300, Report of Cash Payments Over $10,000 Received in a Trade or BusinessPDF. Transactions that require Form 8300 include, but are not limited to: Escrow arrangement contributions.

When you file form 8300, you provide the IRS and FinCEN with tangible records of large cash transactions. Failing to file Form 8300 within 15 days after you receive the funds will lead to you or your business being penalized by the IRS.

As provided by the IRS: Each person engaged in a trade or business who, in the course of that trade or business, receives more than $10,000 in cash in one transaction or in two or more related transactions, must file Form 8300.
