The decedent's body will be available for release soon after completion of the examination, which is generally within 48 to 72 hours after the decedent has been taken into our care.

The coroner will release the body soon as possible—almost always within three days of the person's death. The body is usually released to the funeral director chosen by the family to conduct the funeral. Police must have the government-contracted funeral director transport the deceased to a mortuary.

The California Public Records Act (PRA), Government Code Sections 6250 to 6270, requires the Humboldt County Coroner's Office to make public records available for inspection by the public and to provide copies upon request.

Homicides are held 24 hours after the autopsy before they are released. The next-of-kin are allowed 72 hours following notification of death to make arrangements to have their loved one picked-up to avoid storage charges.

How long can a person who is not a funeral director keep the body of a deceased person after death? A person who is not a funeral director is allowed to keep the body of a deceased person for up to 5 days after the date of death (section 80 of the Regulation).

Generally, most decedents are available for release within two to three days. However, there are times when the release may be delayed for various reasons beyond our control. Your Funeral Director will coordinate the release on your behalf.

A. This depends upon the time it takes to examine a body (or do an autopsy) and take physical evidence. Even if a cause and manner of death is pending, most bodies are able to be released within 24 hours to 48 hours of examination to the funeral home chosen by the family.

A: The Coroner reviews the evidence, and makes a determination of cause and manner of death based on the preponderance of that evidence. The Coroner must have more than 50 percent certainty based on the evidence to make a determination of the cause and manner of death.
