A summary dissolution is an easy way for married couples or registered domestic partners to legally end their marriage quickly. A summary dissolution is the same thing as a divorce, but it takes much less time and requires much less paperwork.

A divorce legally ends a marriage or a Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP). In Oregon divorce is called "dissolution of marriage." A dissolution of marriage or a RDP is started when one spouse or partner files a petition for dissolution. The spouse or partner who files the petition is called the petitioner.

Some uncontested dissolutions where the parties have no children can be completed in under a month. Most often, though, an Oregon uncontested dissolution will take one to three months to finalize.

You both agree to the terms of the divorce You must both agree: That you want to end the marriage or domestic partnership. That neither of you will ever get spousal support.

You have 30 days from the date you were served with the Petition to file a written Response with the court clerk and pay the filing fee. If you don't file a Response within 30 days of being served, the Petitioner can ask the court to enter an Order of Default and then enter a judgment based on the Petition.

If a couple meets the requirements for summary dissolution, they may pick up forms at the courthouse or access them online. Self-help forms for more complex dissolutions also are available. Many Oregon counties have family court facilitators available at the courthouse to help explain the different types of forms.

An uncontested divorce (where you and your spouse agree about the terms of the divorce) can be final about three months after the divorce petition is filed and delivered to your spouse. You may be able to reduce this time if the judge thinks you have a very good reason.

After you have gone through all the steps in a divorce, you will get a "General Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage," which is a court order that ends your marriage. The divorce judgment will usually state: The date your marriage ends (this is the date the judge signs the judgment);
