The Jefferson Davis Executive Mansion was owned by the Confederate Memorial Literary Society from 1894 until 2014, when the Museum of the Confederacy merged with the American Civil War Center. The merged entity is now the American Civil War Museum. The house museum is known as the White House of the Confederacy.

For most of the Civil War, the Confederacy had its own White House. In a physical illustration of how intimate a conflict the Civil War was, the two White Houses weren't all that far apart—just 90 miles separated the Executive Mansion of the Confederacy, in Richmond, and the White House in Washington DC.

The White House of the Confederacy was the executive residence of President Jefferson Davis and family while the capital of the Confederate States of America was in Montgomery, Alabama. Completely furnished with original period pieces from the 1850s and 1860s, the 1835 Italianate-style house is open to the public.

The Confederacy's Need to Raise Revenue Of immediate concern was the need to raise revenue through borrowing, taxation, and printing currency. The Confederate government turned to issuing bonds and printing currency to generate the revenue needed to run government affairs and fund the war effort.

The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states—Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas–and the threat of secession by four more—Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.

At the beginning of the war the Confederacy had some $47 million in bank deposits (compared to $189 million in Northern banks), and $27 million in specie (gold and silver coins) holdings (compared to $45 million worth in the northern states).
