Vehicles transferred as a gift. You may be exempt from paying sales tax on a vehicle transferred to you as a gift from another person. The person transferring the vehicle must have met the tax laws of the state they registered it. You must pay a $25 fee and the title and registration fees.

Can you sell a car for $1? In short, yes. But while selling a car for $1 will allow you to avoid capital gains and gifts taxes, the recipient of the car will have to pay whatever rate of sales tax your state charges on used vehicles when they transfer the title.

If the sale is made by a motor vehicle or trailer dealer or lessor who is registered, the sales tax rate is 6.25%. The use tax applies to all other types of transfers of title or possession where the vehicle transferred is stored, used, or consumed in Massachusetts.

Be sure to have a proper title and bill of sale. All vehicles must have a certificate of title issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and must be properly endorsed at the time of sale.

The person gifting the vehicle must complete a sales tax exemption form (MVU-24). To obtain a registration and title, you will need to submit the following in person at any RMV Service Center: A completed Registration and Title Application. The owner must sign this, and your insurance company must stamp it.
