The method is intended to promote efficient preceptor-learner interactions. The teaching model consists of five steps: 1) get a commitment, 2) probe for supporting evidence, 3) teach general rules, 4) reinforce what was done right, and 5) correct mistakes. The initial step is making a commitment.

Macro skills are most commonly referred to listening, speaking, reading and writing in English language. Listening: This is a communication technique that requires the listener to understand, interpret and evaluate what he or she hears.

The One-Minute Preceptor is a useful combination of proven teaching skills combined to produce a method that is very functional in the clinical setting. It provides the preceptor with a system to provide efficient and effective teaching to the learner around the single patient encounter.

We present a five-step model of clinical teaching that utilizes simple, discrete teaching behaviors or "microskills." The five microskills that make up the model are (1) get a commitment, (2) probe for supporting evidence, (3) teach general rules, (4) reinforce what was done right, and (5) correct mistakes.

These skills are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

The preceptor creates an environment conducive to learning and determines appropriate patient care assignments for students. To do so, the preceptor assesses the learning needs of the student and collaborates with him/her to determine goals and learning outcomes.

A good preceptor does not simply provide students with all of the answers. Rather, an effective preceptor also functions as a coach. The preceptor can accomplish this by prompting students to identify problems, seek the necessary information to resolve the given situation, and propose solutions.
