School Attendance in Maryland Under Maryland law, a truant youth is one who is unlawfully absent from school for more than 8 days in any quarter, 15 days in any semester, or 20 days in a school year.

Code Green Called when students are not reporting to school due to inclement weather, but conditions are safe for employees to report at the normal time. All emergency personnel report as usual. All 12-month employees report on time. Liberal leave is in effect.

The California Legislature defined a truant in very precise language. In summary, it states that a student missing more than 30 minutes of instruction without an excuse three times during the school year must be classified as a truant and reported to the proper school authority.

For more information, call 443-550-6149 or email your inquiry to adulted@csmd.edu. When sending email please note Calvert County in subject line. We look forward to seeing you on campus!

Residency Requirements and Registration Home ownership papers (deed, mortgage coupon within the last three (3) months with parent's/guardian's/custodian's name and physical address). Settlement papers may be accepted with the approval of the Pupil Personnel Worker.

Absences not certified at the end of three (3) days will be considered unlawful. Absences for reasons that do not meet the criteria for excused absences will also be recorded as unlawful absences.

But how many is too many? Most school districts allow students to be absent for up to 10% of the school year, provided the absences are excused. The standard school year lasts for 180 days, so you can have up to 18 excused absences. Once you go over that number, you'll be labeled as a chronic absentee.

Legal Consequences. Any person with legal custody or care and control of a child who 5 years old or older and under 16, who fails to see that the child attends school or receives instruction as required by Maryland law, is guilty of a misdemeanor. If convicted, the person may be subject to fines, imprisonment, or both.
