The poem tells the story of the final half-inning of a baseball game. The home team of Mudville is losing four to two. The first two batters for Mudville quickly make outs, but the following two get on base safely so that a home run will win the game for Mudville.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out.

Casey is so sure of his abilities that he does not swing at the first two pitches, both called strikes. On the last pitch, the overconfident Casey strikes out swinging, ending the game and sending the crowd home unhappy.

/ˌkeɪsi ət ðə ˈbæt/ /ˌkeɪsi ət ðə ˈbæt/ a popular US poem (1888) by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, about a great baseball player who fails. Casey has a chance to win the game but he strikes out (= fails to hit the ball three times and is dismissed).

One of the most beloved popular poems in American literature, Casey at the Bat was first published 130 years ago in The San Francisco Examiner on June 3, 1888.

The Mudville team is losing from the first lines of the poem and the crowd is hoping and praying that Casey, who they're sure can win the game for them, will get a chance to play. Two players go ahead of him, both of whom do better than the crowd expected.

Mighty Casey sneers at the pitcher with determination, and the pitcher makes the third pitch. Casey swings incredibly hard, and the author notes that in other places in the country, people are happy and smiling -- but not in the ballpark, because Casey has struck out to lose the game for Mudville.

"Casey at the Bat": Themes There are three primary themes in "Casey at the Bat": hope, pride, and arrogance. Even as the Mudville nine is losing the game, there is still a contingent of people who hope that Casey can pull out a win. Moreover, this hope is powered by their pride in their star player, Casey.
