Performing a Coggins Test These results, often referred to as Coggins papers, will then be available as either a paper or an electronic certificate and should be kept with the horse's health records. The test results expire one year from the testing date.

A negative Coggins test is usually a requirement before a horse can gain admittance to a sale, though not always. If a horse does not have a negative Coggins test at the time of the sale, an on-site veterinarian might draw blood and send it for testing.

Once a negative test is confirmed by the lab, the Coggins sheet is stamped with a DATE and ACCESSION Number. The Coggins is then mailed back to the veterinarian and then your original copy of the test is mailed to you.

Horse owners need to have a current negative Coggins test certificate for any horse that they take to an equine event or other public place for recreational use. Coggins test certificates are good for 12 months from the date the blood sample needed for the test was drawn from the horse.

Performing a Coggins Test A negative result means that the antibody was not detected in the horse's blood, while a positive result means that antibodies are present. Veterinarians share the results with horse owners in Coggins papers.

Typically they are performed before a horse can travel from one state to another. Coggins test can take from anywhere from 2 to 7 days to get the results back, but many times you can rush the results in 24 hours if you pay an extra fee to the lab analyzing the blood test.
