It involves x-raying the hips, plus elbows if required, of certain canine breeds (eg labrador, german shepherd dog) which are known to be genetically susceptible to hip and or elbow dysplasia.

Hip Scores and What They Mean The scores range from 0 (perfect) to 6 (joint is non functional). After all the scores are worked out and a final score is given. Between 0-3 is acceptable and between 4-6 is unacceptable for breeding purposes.

The hip score is made up of the total number of points given for different features in the hip joint, it is representative of the severity of the condition. The lower the score the better. The minimum score for each hip is 0 and the maximum is 53, giving a range for the total score of 0 to 106.

The hip score can be any number from 0-106. Lower is better. Dogs should only be bred from if their hip score is well below the breed average. So, for example, a score of 20 might be acceptable for one breed, but unacceptable for another.

Digital radiographs must be sent as an attachment to an email or mailed on a CD or USB Memory Stick. We do not accept images from imaging services (Antech, View Cloud, etc.) or as direct DICOM transfers. CDs and emails MUST come from the submitting vet clinic. OFA does not accept digital radiographs from owners.

The first three categories (excellent, good and fair) are generally considered “normal” dogs although they will carry some of the mutations that contribute to hip dysplasia. The last three categories (mild, moderate and severe) are considered “dysplastic” dogs.

For each of these points, each hip is scored from 0 to 6, with 0 being perfect, and 6 being such severe damage that the joint is non-functional. At the end, they add up all the scores and send them in as a Left and a Right Hip score for the dog.

For example, 4/5 means one hip was 4, the other was 5, giving a total of the median = 9. It's not just about meeting the average, though. Preferably, the hips are both roughly the same score. 4/5 is more desirable than 0/9, for example.
