Rabies Javelina can catch rabies, although they do not generally carry it without symptoms. Symptoms of rabies can include foaming at the mouth; erratic, hyperactive behavior; and/or fearful, paralyzed and lethargic behavior.

"Rabies is a human health concern, not just an animal health issue." Regardless of legal requirements, maintaining regular rabies vaccination makes good medical sense. Even a strictly-indoor dog may find a way to sneak out of the house and be exposed to rabies by a wild animal in the neighborhood.

Bats, skunks and foxes are the main sources of rabies in Arizona, ADHS said. A total of 25 rabid skunks and 31 foxes have been reported from January through May. The number of rabid bats is expected to increase as the high temperatures increase.

After the initial series of vaccines, both the DHPP and Rabies vaccines require a booster one year from the last vaccine. After the one-year booster, dogs should receive additional boosters every 3 years.

The first symptoms of rabies can appear from a few days to more than a year after the bite happens. At first, there's a tingling, prickling, or itching feeling around the bite area. A person also might have flu-like symptoms such as a fever, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, nausea, and tiredness.

Per the Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control, 2016, dogs and cats should be initially immunized at three months of age, re-immunized 12 months after the first vaccination, and given a booster every three years if they are vaccinated with a licensed rabies vaccine and the label indicates three years ...
