The request for cancellation must be made through a designated agent appointed by the Alabama Department of Revenue. The department, upon approval of the cancellation request, will issue a certificate of cancellation of the certificate of origin or cancellation of the certificate of title.

If a title cannot be provided, the purchaser may need to obtain a Court Order. Once the Court Order is issued, the purchaser must apply for title by submitting the Court Order Application Packet. Contact your local BMV, ideally with the mobile home's VIN or serial number for more help.

You might have to file a petition with the Court of Common Pleas before seeing a judge. Court order must establish ownership, provide a description of the vehicle (year, make, VIN), direct the BMV to issue you a title, and contain the signature of the judge and court seal or stamp.

The Application for Notice of Cancellation of Manufactured Home Certificate of Title must be completed and submitted to DPS-DVS. After the application has been completed and approved by DPS-DVS, you will receive Notice of Cancellation from DPS-DVS.

In order to cancel the Certificate of Title, the owner of the manufactured home must surrender the original Certificates of Title or manufacturer's statement of origin to permanently affixed manufactured homes to the Department. The Department must then issue a receipt for the documents surrendered.

An “Affidavit of Affixation” must be executed by all who have an ownership interest in the manufactured home and the land to the effect that the manufactured home is permanently affixed.

If the mobile home is no longer owned by the person listed on the assessment notice, the owner must bring the mobile home title to the County Treasurer's Office and apply for a Mobile Home Title Transfer Permit. All property taxes must be paid to obtain the permit including property taxes assessed to previous owners.

Mobile Home Characteristics Mobile and manufactured homes are taxed as personal property unless (1) they have been attached to the ground and (2) the homeowner has applied for, and has been subsequently approved for, a transfer of title to real property.
