Withdrawing from a class means that the class will still show up on your transcript, but in place of a letter grade, you'll see a W. While this class doesn't affect your grade, it will still follow you through your academic career, so you should use your withdrawals wisely.

A withdrawal from a class (W) is GPA-neutral: instead of a grade, you receive a W notation on your transcript which does not affect your GPA; you also don't earn credits for the course.

“A drop from the course is usually done early in the semester and has no impact on the student's grade, GPA or transcript,” Croskey says. However, students should be very aware of deadlines, financial aid requirements and course timelines before dropping a class.

The course will appear on your transcript with a "W" grade notation. Credits hours will remain unchanged. Enrollment time status will not change. Semester bill will remain unchanged.

And while it may not be ideal, dropping a class is usually not a big deal. In most cases, dropped classes will simply appear as “W” (withdrawal) on your transcript. This means that the class will not count toward your GPA, but it also won't have a negative impact on your academic record.

Leave of Absence is only available to those who have attended at least one term of courses at Temple University. If you are a new student who wishes to defer enrolling in your first semester, please contact the Office of Admissions to discuss your options.
