Least preferred co-worker (LPC)Fiedler assumes that everybody's least preferred coworker in fact is on average about equally unpleasant. But people who are indeed relationship motivated, tend to describe their least preferred coworkers in a more positive manner, e.g., more pleasant and more efficient.

The least preferred coworker (LPC) scale requires a person to rate the one individual they would least want to work with the least-preferred coworker using a range of 18 to 25 bipolar (positive or negative) adjectives, with ratings from 1 to 8. The LPC score is then computed by totaling all the ratings.

Fiedler believed that leadership style is fixed, and it can be measured using a scale he developed called Least-Preferred Co-Worker (LPC) Scale (see figure 1).

They include: Fiedler's Contingency Theory, the Situational Leadership Theory, the Path-Goal Theory and the Decision-Making Theory.

To do this, Fiedler developed a scale called the Least Preferred Coworker (LPC).

Fiedler's Contingency Theory of Leadership states that your effectiveness as a leader is determined by how well your leadership style matches the situation. The theory is based on the premise that each of us has one and only one leadership style which can be scored on the Least Preferred Co-worker (LPC) scale.

The least-preferred coworker scale (LPC) is a management heuristic that assigns an individual's leadership style as either task-oriented or relationship-oriented. The scale utilizes a subjective evaluation of an individual's attitudes toward their least favorable coworker.

The LPC theory refers to the central variable of the model, a measure of the esteem in which the leader holds his or her least preferred coworker. The leader of each work group included in a study completes an LPC questionnaire to measure the leader's leadership style and orientation.
