TAFT-HARLETY The Taft-Hartley Act requires union productions to report the hiring of non-members to the union. Upon gaining union eligibility, a performer has 30 days to work union or non-union before becoming a “must join,” after which union productions are penalized for hiring them if they have not joined.

Do you have to have a SAG card to be an actor? You do not need a SAG card to be an actor! You can act in non-union productions for as long as you like, but if you eventually want to perform in bigger projects, like network-level film & television, joining the union will be a must.

How to get a SAG card as an extra? To get a SAG card as an extra, all you need to do is perform as an extra (background actor) for three full days on set and make sure to ask for your SAG vouchers each day.

Performers may join SAG-AFTRA if the applicant is a paid-up member of an affiliated performers' union such as ACTRA, AEA, AGMA or AGVA for a period of one year, and has worked and been paid for at least once as a principal performer in that union's jurisdiction.

If you have three waivers (that is you were hired three times by any productions to replace a union role they could not fill) you become SAG-eligible. You also start a 30 day clock in which you can work as many union roles as you like without joining.

Q. Any expiration date to waivers? A. There is no expiration for Taft-Hartley waivers, but remember – it is the work and not the waiver that counts towards eligibility, so be sure to retain a copy of your paystub along with your waiver (voucher).

If you don't report the Taft Hartley or file it later than the fifteen days, there is a $320 fee. And there is a $300 fine if SAG determines there is a 'preference' violation (basically the actor doesn't meet qualifications as a professional performer).

Qualifying for SAG waiver The SAG waiver is issued to a nonunion actor allowed to play a SAG role in a unionized production when no available SAG member fits the part.
