Ngāti Tuwharetoa are descended from Tuwharetoa-i-te-aupouri, who was a chief from the Bay of Plenty and a direct descendant of Ngātoroirangi (the high priest of Te Arawa waka). It is Ngātoroirangi who claimed many of Ngāti Tuwharetoa's lands for his descendants upon arriving in New Zealand.
