No, throw away any leftover formula. Harmful bacteria can multiply since the last feeding, which could make your baby sick.

So, how long can bottles sit out safely? Once you finish feeding your baby, any prepared infant formula left in the bottle should be thrown out within 1 hour.

If your baby doesn't finish all the formula, throw it away within one hour. Storing half-finished bottles of formula for later is risky because when your baby drinks from a bottle of formula, bacteria from their mouth get into the milk.

If you run out of formula and can't find any, in a pinch you can give oral rehydration solution (such as Pedialyte, Enfalyte, or a store brand) for a couple of days. Babies older than 4 to 6 months can also get puréed (finely ground) foods.

If your baby starts a bottle but doesn't finish it within an hour, throw the leftover formula away. Bacteria from your baby's mouth can seep into the bottle, contaminate the formula, and make your baby sick if they drink it later.

After 24 hours, toss any you haven't used, because bacteria may have formed. Once you've opened ready-to-feed formula, store it in closed bottles or tightly cover the container and refrigerate it immediately. Discard any that's leftover based on the package directions.

At 12 months old (but not before), your child can be introduced to cow's milk. Before your child is 12 months old, cow's milk may put him or her at risk for intestinal bleeding. It also has too many proteins and minerals for your baby's kidneys to handle and does not have the right amount of nutrients your baby needs.

It's best not to keep part of a bottle for later. Health Canada recommends using a bottle within two hours of starting a feed. If your baby doesn't finish all of their feed, throw away the rest. It may seem wasteful, but it's safer for your baby.
