- Calculate the total scores for understandability and actionability by summing the points you assigned and dividing by the total possible points, excluding any ‘Not Applicable’ items.

NLM's assessment tool is based on the understandability items from the Patient Education Materials. The PEMATP is for printable materials such as brochures, pamphlets, and PDFs. The PEMAT-P includes items 1–12 and 15–19 for understandability and items 20–26 for actionability. PEMAT-P tool assesses 2 aspects of the materials, understandability and actionability, and is available freely online. For PEMAT-P, items 1-12 and 15-19 assess understandability, while items 20-26 evaluate actionability.
