The idea behind channel names and importance values is so users can better decide which notifications to accept and which to block, as notifications should exist to add value to the user. The NotificationChannel system is designed specifically to steer you away from doing what you are trying to do.

Starting with Android 8.0 (API level 26), notification badges—also known as notification dots—appear on a launcher icon when the associated app has an active notification. Users can touch & hold the app icon to reveal the notifications, along with any app shortcuts, as shown in figure 1.

Now run your app and we will send our first notification in our Android app. For sending notifications in One Signal click on your app name in the top left corner of One Signal Console and then click on your app name you will get to see the Dashboard screen. Click on the New Push option to send a new notification.

Notification Channels are a way to organize push notifications that were added with Android O. Starting with O, all push notifications must have a Notification Channel that indicates the type of message (e.g., “chat notifications,” or “follow notifications”).

"Notification Channels" were introduced in 2017 with Android 8.0 Oreo. The idea is that apps can group different types of notifications into "channels." Each channel can then be turned on or off by the user. This all happens in the Android settings. Let's take a look at YouTube, for example.

Starting with Android 8.0, apps are required to assign their notifications to so-called “notification channels”. These channels determine which signals (notification sound, light, vibration, etc.) incoming notifications trigger.
