The Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule. Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.

10 µg/ft2 MRL is for your risk assessors to conduct floor dust sampling of 2 ft2 with a single wipe, rather than the standard minimum of 1 ft2.

1) Enclosure: This can be the easiest of all methods. The lead paint is covered with a wall covering. This is typically done for large surfaces such as walls. 2) Replacement: This method involves completely removing the door, window or molding that is covered in lead paint and replacing it with a new one.

Any renovation, repair, or painting (RRP) project in a pre-1978 home or building can easily create dangerous lead dust. EPA requires that RRP projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and preschools built before 1978 be performed by lead-safe certified contractors.

Once the visual inspection is complete, one of two activities must be conducted in order for the area to be cleared for use; the first option is that a Certified Renovator must perform a cleaning verification.

Typically, interior clearance is achieved by means of dust wipe sampling by a certified inspector or risk assessor using single surface dust wipes. This is required on all U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) jobs.

Who can conduct a Lead Clearance? At minimum a Clearance Technician can conduct a Lead Clearance on non-abatement jobs. Higher level professionals can also conduct a Lead Clearance including an Inspector or Risk Assessor.
