Most states have AED testing requirements to ensure that defibrillators are working and ready to use in an emergency. Conducting visual inspections and testing the device is the responsibility of the person or organization that owns the AED and must be carried out ing to the manufacturer's instructions.

AEDs must be inspected regularly (monthly or quarterly). Staff members need to be trained in CPR and the use of AEDs. Reporting and refurbishing are required after use. You should always follow all manufacturer guidelines as noted in your user manuals.

AEDs Require Maintenance It's designed to allow bystanders to respond to a cardiac emergency. While easy to use, AEDs contain parts that may need occasional service. It's important that you designate someone to conduct routine maintenance checks on any AEDs within your ministry.

Inspect all AEDs on the premises at least every 90 days for potential issues related to the operability of the device such as dead batteries or blinking lights.

Although every state has Good Samaritan Laws that protect the user and the owner if the AED is used, many of those laws include that the AED must be maintained per manufacturer guidelines. Someone should be responsible for performing AED maintenance checks at least monthly and these checks should be logged.

In order to work properly, an AED does require some maintenance, or it may not work reliably in an emergency. Other than replacing parts as recommended by the manufacturer, this primarily involves regular testing and inspections every 3 months.

Standards. OSHA standards do not specifically address automated external defibrillators (AEDs). However exposures to first-aid hazards are addressed in specific OSHA standards for the general industry.
