You may want to enroll in overdraft protection to ensure you won't ever be turned down for a debit purchase or ATM withdrawal. It can be a helpful service if you ever spend more than what's in your account, but it usually comes with a cost. Ultimately, it's your decision to enroll in overdraft protection.

Opt out of the service for ATM and one time debit card transactions: You may opt out of ODP for the authorization and payment of ATM and one time debit card transactions. If you do not have sufficient funds in your account, your withdrawals at the ATM and one time debit card transactions will be declined.

Overdraft fees work a little differently for debit cards. Your bank or credit union cannot charge you fees for overdrafts on ATM and most debit card transactions unless you have agreed (“opted in”) to these fees.

Overdraft transactions not required to be authorized or paid. Section 1005.17 does not require a financial institution to authorize or pay an overdraft on an ATM or one-time debit card transaction even if the consumer has affirmatively consented to an institution's overdraft service for such transactions.
