You can apply for a place at a state primary school online or by using your council's application form. You apply through your local council even if you're applying for schools in another council area.

If your child is due to start school in August 2023, you can enrol your child online from Monday 9 January 2023. Your catchment school will contact you between Monday 16 to Friday 20 January 2023 to confirm your enrolment.

An in-year admission is when you are applying for a school place outside of the 'normal admissions rounds'. (Normal admissions rounds are a statutory process where all parents/carers must apply for a place for their child to start school in the school's 'year of entry' at Primary, or Secondary school).

Children start school aged between 4.5yrs and 5.5yrs, depending on when the child's birthday falls. Arrangements for entry to primary schools are on a once a year basis - at the start of the new session in August each year.

You can apply by phone until 31 August 2023, tel: 01629 533190 from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturdays.

You must apply for a primary school place a year before your child can start school. Applications open in September and close on 15 January. Your child will be 3 or have just turned 4 when you apply. You'll need to apply then even if you want your child to start part-way through the year.

Most children begin primary school at the start of the school year in which they reach school age (5 years old). All schools must provide for the admission of children from the September following their fourth birthday. A school year runs from September to the following August.
