A narrow bandpass filter is a specialized optical filter designed to isolate a narrow region while rejecting all other wavelengths of light.

The Passive Band Pass Filter can be used to isolate or filter out certain frequencies that lie within a particular band or range of frequencies.

Narrowband filters are designed to capture specific wavelengths of light. There is a large class of celestial objects known as emission nebulae, and their name arises from the fact that they are actually emitting their own light (as opposed to reflection nebulae, which shine by reflectedstarlight).

Narrow Bandpass Filter Specifications The full-width half-max (FWHM) of the bandpass filter gives the width of the pass band at half of maximum transmission. The FWHM of a narrow band pass filter will be less than 6% of the central wavelength.

Notch filters by design have a very narrow and very deep stop band around their center frequency with the width of the notch being described by its selectivity Q in exactly the same way as resonance frequency peaks in RLC circuits. The most common notch filter design is the twin-T notch filter network.

Narrowband systems typically have lower data rate transmissions, whereas wideband systems support relatively higher data rate transmissions. To put simply, wideband systems allow for faster communication.

The Q-factor is the reciprocal of the fractional bandwidth. A high-Q filter will have a narrow passband and a low-Q filter will have a wide passband. These are respectively referred to as narrow-band and wide-band filters.

The bandpass filter response (Figure 6.1C) is essentially overlaid LPF and HPF responses. There are two cutoff frequencies: a lower limit (F1) and an upper limit (FH), both of which are defined a t −3 dB points. The bandwidth of the BPF is defined as the difference between −3 dB points: (6.1) B .W . = F H − F L.
