Unfortunately, in some stretches of the river, toxic pollution and unsafe bacteria levels make doing so unsafe. Much of the Columbia River is safe for swimming, but use caution.

The Columbia River gorge is a spectacular river canyon, 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep, that meanders past cliffs, spires, and ridges set against nearby peaks of the PNW's Cascade Mountain Range.

Water depths have been estimated at 1,000 feet (300 m) at Wallula Gap and 400 feet (120 m) over modern Portland, Oregon.

Mammal species include, deer, bobcat, beaver, yellow-bellied marmot, black bear, California ground squirrel, along with amphibians and reptiles such as the Pacific tree frog and garter snake are common inhabitants. Many fish species can be found in the Columbia River, and salmon are well-known inhabitants.

Geological history The Gorge's formation began 40 to 60 million years ago, when molten lava pressure pushed up granite to frame the Columbia Basin. Between 6 to 17 million years ago, ancient volcanoes erupted, streaming more than 20 massive basalt flows into the area that's now the Gorge.

The gorge is a popular destination for hiking, biking, sightseeing, fishing, and water sports. The area is known for its high concentration of waterfalls, with over 90 on the Oregon side of the gorge alone. Many are along the Historic Columbia River Highway, including the notable 620-foot-high (190 m) Multnomah Falls.

The Columbia River channel begins at the Columbia River bar and continues five miles upriver at a depth of 55 feet and a width of 2,640 feet. After which, it maintains a depth of 43 feet and a width of 600 feet for 100 miles to the Portland Harbor.

The navigable channel depth is kept at 40 feet as far as Portland and at 27 feet between Portland and Bonneville Locks. Depths to 300 feet have been measured near The Dalles, Oreg., and to 200 feet in lower river and estuary.
