One month later, the Minister introduced the Safe Schools Act, which proposed amending the Education Act to give force to the Code of Conduct and provide principals and teachers with more authority to suspend and expel students. The Act was passed by the legislature in June 2000 and came into effect in September 2001.

The policy provides direction to schools on how to prevent and respond to bullying and other inap- propriate behaviours. This includes teaching students how to be safe, respectful, and responsible both in-person and online.

On November 14, 2022, the Ontario government tabled and passed Bill 35, Keeping Students in Class Repeal Act, 2022, which repeals Bill 28, Keeping Students in Class Act, 2022 and deems it never to have been in force.

Under Bill 157, employees of school boards will be required to report to the principal, as soon as is reasonably possible, after becoming aware that a student may have engaged in any of the activities listed in subsections 306(1) or 310(1) of Part XIII of the Education Act.

A student can be suspended for between 1 and 20 school days, and suspended students cannot attend school or take part in school activities, in- cluding extra curricular activities. Students who are suspended for more than 5 school days must be offered an academic program that will help them keep learning.
