Screen resolutions are often explained by the following abbreviations: SD (Standard Definition), HD (High definition), Full HD, 2K and 4K. 2K and 4k refers to the number of the pixels in the horizontal direction.

If you're familiar with aspect ratios, you'll probably know about the fact that in the last four or so years, monitors have switched from being predominately 16:10 (typically 1,680 x 1,050 or 1,920 x 1,200) to 16:9 (usually 1,600 x 900 or 1,920 x 1,080).

2K (QHD) Resolution 2K resolution is 2560 pixels horizontally and 1440 pixels vertically, compared to the 1920 x 1080 pixels from Full-HD Resolution. It is referred to as QHD because it has 4 times the pixels as 720p.

Note that the 3840×2160 resolution is also referred to as 4K UHD (Ultra HD) or 2160p, whereas 2560×1440 also goes by QHD, WQHD (Wide Quad HD) or 1440p – it's sometimes incorrectly referred to as '2K' – but this resolution actually stands for 2048×1080 instead.

The 16:9 aspect ratio describes a width of 16 units and a height of 9 units. Depending on the device, you can measure a unit in pixels, inches, or millimeters, for example. Technically, the 16:9 format is an aspect ratio of 1.77:1 or 1.78:1, because 16 divided by 9 is 1.777.

Television broadcasting stayed with the 4:3 standard, until the recent move to HDTV and 16:9 widescreen. 16:9 is the native aspect ratio of most high-definition widescreen LCD monitors and TV's (16:9 and 16:10 are very similar). It is 78% wider than it is tall, and fully one-third wider than a 4:3 screen.

2560x1440 and 2560x1600 (2K) Screens at these resolutions, conventionally called 1440p or sometimes 2K, are more expensive than 1080p screens, but also more expansive. A while ago, these were the highest resolutions available for normal consumers, before 3840x2160 began to sell for reasonable prices.

Full HD is just another term for 1080p or 1920x1080, and those are all ways of referring to the same resolution. By contrast, 4K has a resolution of 3840x2160. That's a lot more pixels in the overall image — totaling over 8 million pixels. As always, the higher the resolution, the sharper the picture will be.

2560 x 1600 is a non standard resolution which has almost exactly 4 million pixels, as compared to the almost exactly 2 million pixels of the Full HD resolution. Why was 1080p to 4k such a big noticable difference while 4k to 8k is not as noticeable, even though it's the same multiple of resolution?
