What is a Telex release? A Telex release is the industry term for the release of cargo at one port when the original bill of lading has been surrendered at another. Although this is still referred to as a Telex release, today the release is almost always made by e-mail. Telex release is a normal part of liner shipping.

' That service used the telegraph machine to send messages. From the telegraph we get TEL, and from Exchange, we get EX, thus the name, TELEX. The telex service was used to facilitate a real-time one-on-one talk with someone on the other side of the world. People could also use it to send previously drafted messages.

A telex release for a bill of lading (BOL) is one of the most crucial documents required to release the cargo at one port, even though the shipper has surrendered the OBL at a different port. Shippers can usually obtain a telex release by contacting the carrier that issued the OBL.

The primary benefit of telex release is that cargo ownership is proven to all parties within seconds of an email being sent. The documents can be signed, approved, and cargo can be released all within a day.

What Is a Telex Release? Also known as a release bill of lading, telex bill of lading, and telegraphic transfer, a telex release is an email message containing bill of lading information that allows a carrier to release goods to a designated recipient without having the physical, original bill of lading in hand.

A telex release is in essence an electronic message transmitted from an agent or shipping line at the port of loading (POL) to the agent at the port of discharge (POD). This message signifies that the shipper has surrendered the original Bill of Lading (OBL).

A Bill of Lading and a Telex Release are vital to shipping and they are two items that you absolutely must know in the field of logistics. An Original Bill of Lading is a paper bill of lading that is issued to a customer. A Telex Release is an electronic release that is given in return for a surrendered bill of lading.
