Castle Frankenstein is the name commonly attributed to the ancestral home of the infamous Frankenstein Family. There have been several edifices that have been called Castle Frankenstein, but the most famous of which exists in Geneva, Switzerland.

Frankenstein Castle is a medieval fortification on a spur above the village of Frankenstein, Rhineland-Palatinate in the Palatinate Forest in Germany. Its name derives from the local House of Frankenstein.

Frankenstein Castle's most famous inhabitant, Johann Conrad Dippel, was almost undoubtedly Mary Shelley's inspiration for Victor Frankenstein. He was an alchemist who lived in the Frankenstein castle during the late 1600s. He was known for experimenting with corpses and dissecting animals.

After the Palatinate had become part of Bavaria, the ruins of the castle were secured in 1883–84. Another upgrading took place in 1938–39. Today the castle is owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Frankenstein Castle (German: Burg Frankenstein) is a hilltop castle in the Odenwald overlooking the city of Darmstadt in Germany. This castle may have been an inspiration for Mary Shelley when she wrote her 1818 Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

Coordinates: 49°47′35.84″N 8°40′5.58″E Frankenstein Castle is in southern Hesse, Germany, on the spurs of the Odenwald mountain range at an elevation of 370 m (1,210 ft) close to the southern outskirts of Darmstadt.
