The Rivanna River first becomes navigable for canoes and kayaks as its two main tributaries, the South and North forks, approach Charlottesville. The Occoquan Reservoir provides drinking water supply to Northern Virginia through the Fredrick P. Griffith treatment plant. This plant can treat up to 120 million gallons of drinking water per day. The Potomac River provides water to area residents through the James J.

The City of Charlottesville's water is treated and monitored by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority ( RWSA ). The water quality meets all the standards in place by the Safe Drinking Water Act, EPA , and Virginia Health Department.

The Hoadly Manor Water System is a small water system that serves the aforementioned subdivision along Hoadly Road and Websters Way in Woodbridge. The water for the Hoadly Manor System is drawn from the Occoquan Reservoir and purchased from Virginia American Water.

City of Charlottesville water comes from South Fork Rivanna River Reservoir and Ragged Mountain Reservoir: South Fork Rivanna River Reservoir: located off Route 29 north and is the primary water source for the City of Charlottesville. This reservoir is filled primarily from Mechums and Moormans river.
