Dule joints are equipped with high pressure O-ring seals to ensure high gas-tightness. 4 The conductors are linked by coupling contacts capable of absorbing movements due to thermal expansion. Where necessary, the joints are acces ible via openings which s are closed with gas-tight and pressure-resistant covers. Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is used as insulating and arcquenching me ium. Any moisture or decomposition prodd ucts are com letely absorbed by static filters in the gas p compartm.

GIS uses the gas sulfur hexafluoride for insulation, whereas AIS uses air insulation in a metal-clad system. Sulfur hexafluoride is five times heavier than air and offers excellent extinction behavior.

As indicated, the cost of a GIS indoor substation is much higher compared to an AIS substation, but the benefits of a GIS are by far more desirable and include high reliability, less space and far less maintenance.

The air insulated switchgear is a secondary power distribution device and is a medium voltage switchgear that redistributes the power of a primary power distribution device that is powered by a high voltage distribution transformer.

All these devices are immersed in sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6) inside shielded compartments that are bordered by barrier devices.

Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is the name for a unit that houses these components and circuits in a single gas tank with a compact footprint. Grounding devices that prevent electrical shock and lightning arresters that prevent dielectric breakdowns from lightning strikes are also included to enhance safety.

As the air insulated substation is a conventional switchgear substation, it requires a large area for installation. Whereas gas insulated substation is compact and requires comparatively less area for installation. Space required for GIS is less than 20% of AIS [6].

8DN9 gas-insulated switchgear For onshore system voltages up to 245 kV. For offshore system voltages up to 300 kV. Compact, space-saving construction. Very low level of noise and field emission (EMC) making it suitable for sensitive environments such as residential areas and city centers.

While AIS insulates using air in a metal-clad structure, GIS uses the chemical gas sulfur hexafluoride. Since it is five times heavier than air, sulfur hexafluoride exhibits excellent extinction behavior.

Gas-insulated high-voltage switchgear (GIS) is a compact metal encapsulated switchgear consisting of high-voltage components such as circuit-breakers and disconnectors, which can be safely operated in confined spaces.

GIS is inherently arc resistant by its design when compared to metal-clad design. As the voltage decreases, metal-clad switchgear is more cost- effective, as the cost of metal-clad switchgear is less at lower voltages, while the cost for GIS remains similar across voltage ratings.
