Since the two inputs are at the same frequency when the loop is locked, we have one output at twice the input frequency and an output proportional to the cosine of the phase difference. The doubled frequency component must be removed by the lowpass loop filter.

The Loop Filter subsystem block is a passive filter whose order can vary from two to four. In a phase-locked loop (PLL) system, the subsystem filters the output of Charge Pump block and delivers the control voltage to a VCO block to generate required frequency signal.

PLLs are used in many applications such as FM demodulator, clock generator etc. Initially, PLL operates in free running mode when no input is applied to it. When an input signal having some frequency is applied to PLL, then the output signal frequency of VCO will start change.

The main purpose of a PLL circuit is to synchronize an output oscillator signal with a reference signal. When the phase difference between the two signals is zero, the system is “locked.” A PLL is a closed-loop system with a control mechanism to reduce any phase error that may occur.

Many FPGAs use a phase-locked loop (PLL) to increase the internal clock speed. The iCE40 on the IceStick allows you to run up to 275 MHz by setting the internal PLL with the onboard 12 MHz reference clock. However, you will often find the higher clock speed increases the chances of glitches in your design.

The phase-locked loop (PLL) block is a feedback control system that automatically adjusts the phase of a locally generated signal to match the phase of an input signal. PLLs operate by producing an oscillator frequency to match the frequency of an input signal.

Phased lock loop is a control system that makes an output signal whose frequency is depends on the input phase difference. Phase detector compares phase of input signal with the phase derived from its output oscillator adjusts the frequency of its oscillator to maintain the phase matches.

Description The advantage of having a PLL with programmable bandwidth is that the designer can set the bandwidth to the appropriate value to balance the need for jitter filtering and lock time. A high bandwidth allows the PLL to track jitter, whereas a low bandwidth filters out high-frequency jitter.
