Highly ethnocentric consumers have a strong preference to purchase domestic products, and they believe domestic products are superior to imported products. Consumer ethnocentrism is the major influencer to purchase intention.

So what is the problem with ethnocentrism? Ethnocentrism leads to misunderstanding others. We falsely distort what is meaningful and functional to other peoples through the tinted lens of our own life experience. We see their ways in terms of our experience, not their context.

A good example is cars that are produced in the US, while the US firms have assembly plants in China. Ethnocentric consumers will not consume such products because they exclusively consume products that are produced within their own country.

Consumer ethnocentrism is defined as “the beliefs held by consumers about the appropriateness, indeed morality of purchasing foreign-made products” (Shimp & Sharma, 1987, p. 280). It is agreed that consumer ethnocentrism impacts negatively on consumers' purchase intention toward foreign products.

There are four components of the Socio-Psychological Antecedents, consisting of animosity, conservatism, cultural openness, and patriotism. These constructs can affect the level of consumer ethnocentrism tendency toward purchasing foreign and domestic products.

Ethnocentric consumers believe that their country, as well as their homemade products, is superior to any other country on the globe. In some instances, it results in refusing or boycotting products from foreign countries.

Consumer ethnocentrism is a psychological concept that describes how consumers purchase products based on country of origin. It refers to ethnocentric views held by consumers in one country, the in-group, towards products from another country, the out-group (Shimp & Sharma, 1987).

Ethnocentrism is thus one of the factors which affect the willingness of consumers to buy foreign and domestic products (Wang and Chen, 2004), and it has been found to exert a stronger influence than marketing strategies on those decisions (Herche, 1994).

A good example is cars that are produced in the US, while the US firms have assembly plants in China. Ethnocentric consumers will not consume such products because they exclusively consume products that are produced within their own country.

Ethnocentrism often leads to incorrect assumptions about others' behavior based on your own norms, values, and beliefs. In extreme cases, a group of individuals may see another culture as wrong or immoral and because of this may try to convert, sometimes forcibly, the group to their own ways of living.
