If you have damaged banknotes, you can submit a damaged banknote claim. The Reserve Bank will determine the value of the damaged banknotes as per the Damaged Banknotes Policy and reimburse you the assessed amount.

A banknote will only usually be reimbursed at face value if we have at least half of the banknote. The only cases where less than half of a note will be replaced typically apply to businesses when there is clear auditable evidence that genuine notes have been destroyed - a fire at an ATM, for instance.

If you have damaged banknotes, you can submit a damaged banknote claim. The Reserve Bank will determine the value of the damaged banknotes as per the Damaged Banknotes Policy and reimburse you the assessed amount.

As said, you send whatever remains of the note you have off to the Department of Mutilated Notes with a form. They judge whether your claim is genuine, and usually transfer the face value of the note directly into your bank account.

If less than 20 per cent of the banknote is missing: Full face value is paid. If between 20 and 80 per cent of the banknote is missing: The value is paid in proportion to the percentage remaining, for example, $5 value for half of a $10 banknote. If more than 80 per cent of the banknote is missing: No value is paid.

Incomplete Banknotes A banknote with a significant piece missing is classified as incomplete. These banknotes may not be worth full value because the Reserve Bank needs to take into account the possibility that pieces of the banknote may be presented for value separately.

As per RBI (Note Refund) Rules, 2009, which was amended in 2018, no bank can decline to exchange the damaged, mutilated, taped or torn banknotes. So any damaged genuine currency note, be it soiled, mutilated or imperfect can be exchanged by any bank branch or RBI issue office.

You can take your scarred bank note into any bank branch, credit union or building society, ing to the RBA. At these places, you can file a damaged-banknote claim. You'll need to bring your damaged notes in an envelope or sealable bag with details about the contamination on the outside.
