The Minnesota Supreme Court is the court of last resort in cases filed in Minnesota state courts, exercising original or appellate jurisdiction as conferred by the Minnesota Constitution. The court often resolves challenges that concern the constitutional rights of the people of the state of Minnesota.

The judicial branch consists of three levels: a supreme court, a court of appeals, and district courts. Each level of the judicial branch has different roles and responsibilities.

The federal court system has three main levels: district courts (the trial court), circuit courts which are the first level of appeal, and the Supreme Court of the United States, the final level of appeal in the federal system.

Our mission is to provide justice through a system that assures equal access for the fair and timely resolution of cases and controversies.

The chief justice leads the Supreme Court, which, besides handling the cases that come before the court, has the responsibility for regulating the practice of law and the promulgation of statewide rules of procedure and practice before all courts of the state. There are seven justices on the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court is the rule-making body for all of the state's courts. In addition, the Supreme Court shares administrative responsibility for the operation of the state court system with the Judicial Council. The Supreme Court is also responsible for governing the practice of law.

They are public. A conviction record shows that a jury or judge accepted the allegation as true beyond a reasonable doubt. Criminal case restraining orders, though public, are still less damaging than a record of conviction.
