An application for a new, renewed or duplicate watercraft registration may be processed at any BMV branch. Registration renewals and duplicate registration cards may also be processed online.

New owners will be required to present a bill of sale to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) in order to prove ownership when registering and titling the vessel under their name. Signing Requirements – The buyer(s) and seller(s) must each sign the document.

Watercraft purchased outside Indiana and brought into Indiana to be registered or titled are subject to Indiana use tax. The use tax rate is identical to the Indiana sales tax rate (7%). The tax is to be collected upon registration and/or titling at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Indiana residents are required to obtain an Indiana certificate of title for all watercraft (unless specifically exempt from registration). You must apply for a certificate of title within 45 days after the date of purchase or an administrative penalty will be charged.

A Watercraft Registration Renewal Fee is charged each time the watercraft registration is renewed.
