The warfighting arm of Navy Special Operations is comprised of the most elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units in the world.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal EOD Officers are Ordnance Officers trained in the identification, render-safe, and disposal of hazardous unexploded conventional, chemical, nuclear, and improvised explosive devices.

First of all, the prospective EOD Marine needs to be a US citizen. Any dual citizenship must be relinquished to qualify. Marines must also possess or qualify for a security clearance. On the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a general technical score of 110 or higher is necessary.

EOD School (42 weeks) – After successfully completing dive school, candidates transfer to Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal School at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, FL. This training comes in four sections, each teaching how to render safe or defuse specific types of ordnance.

a. Marine Forces Command and Marine Forces Special Operations Command each have an EOD Officer and an EOD Chief within the headquarters G-3 staff section. Marine Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC) also has an EOD Officer within the G-3 staff section.

Basic, Senior and Master are the three levels of the EOD badge, the only joint service occupational badge awarded by the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force.

EOD Marines are often deployed to foreign battlefields. In addition, they may also coordinate with federal or local agencies under a domestic threat. EOD technicians are prepared to face dangerous, intense conditions with elevated risk of severe injury or even death.
